Preventive orthodontics is applied to children aged 6-14 years and is practiced either suppressively in order to prevent the occurrence of future orthodontic abnormalities in the permanent teeth or to reduce the extent, intensity and time of correction of an inevitable orthodontic problem of the permanent dental arch.
It aims to improve existing orthodontic abnormalities, restore proper jaw relationship & prepare subsequent treatment to be easier, shorter, without permanent tooth extractions.
No more braces! We can now do preventive orthodontics with transparent aligners from the age of 6!
These are orthognathic orthopedic devices intended for the correction of functional and skeletal abnormalities or bad habits during the period of child development. There are countless different devices and their aim is to correct some of the most common problems in children’s oral development: compressed arches, lack of or excessive space between teeth, crossbites, lower arches that exceed the upper ones in size… Although they can improve dental alignment, it is not their primary job, which is done much more effectively after children’s teeth are changed.
The ideal age for the first visit to the orthodontist! That is, when the change of the primary (baby) teeth begins. Usually at this age, the four permanent molars erupt in the mouth, followed by the four permanent upper and lower anterior incisors. At this stage, there is a possibility that a problem has already occurred that needs orthodontic intervention, such as finger sucking, premature loss of primary teeth, crossbite, etc.
At this age, it is possible to apply the so-called preventive orthodontic appliances which prevent the development of a large orthodontic abnormality by creating the necessary space in the dental arch. In this way we avoid in many cases extractions of permanent teeth and long-term future treatments with braces or “difficult” orthodontic appliances.
This period is ideal for making changes to the jaw bones and intervening in the relationship between them, as the child is just before the peak of his/her skeletal development. Taking advantage of the dynamics of growth, we apply orthopedic forces to correct possible bone problems, such as the disproportion between the upper and lower jaws or the remaining growth of one of them (prognathism or retrognathism problems), so that in addition to the ideal dental occlusion, we also achieve a beautiful, harmonious facial profile.
The permanent teeth arch is now complete and therefore, we can proceed to the restoration of any orthodontic problem with clear aligners or braces.. With the orthodontic treatment, we restore occlusion disorders, crooked and crowded teeth, teeth with gaps between them, increased horizontal or vertical tooth protrusion, open bites, crossbites, etc. in order to obtain an aesthetically and functionally perfect mouth!
Orthodontics in these ages is performed with aligners or braces (metal, transparent or lingual). As the development of our skeleton and skull is complete, we restore and improve the position of the teeth in order to achieve a perfect smile.
Our teeth can be moved with the help of orthodontics at any age. The only requirement, of course, is that the periodontal-supporting tissues of the teeth are in perfect health. Therefore, orthodontic treatment can be performed by young and old alike with successful results!
