Orthognathic Surgery<\/span><\/span><\/h3><\/header>

Orthognathic Surgery (from the words ortho = right & gnathos = jaw) is a surgical procedure that aims to restore maxillofacial malformations. This surgery achieves a more harmonious & healthy balance between all the patient’s features by moving the bones of the upper and lower jaw.<\/b><\/div>\n<\/div>

This type of facial imbalances appear during bone growth, become stable at the end of bone growth & can cause problems such as sleep apnea, temporomandibular joint disorders, incorrect tooth occlusion <\/strong>or skeletal disharmony.<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>

Orthognathic surgery should be performed by a specialist maxillofacial<\/strong> surgeon, the only specialist indicated to treat both the bones and soft tissues of the facial region.<\/div>\n

There are three types of orthognathic surgery:<\/div>\n

  1. upper jaw surgery,<\/li>\n
  2. lower jaw surgery,<\/li>\n
  3. upper & lower jaw surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>

    Orthodontic & Orthognathic Surgery<\/span><\/span><\/h3><\/header>

    Orthognathic surgery is closely related to orthodontics. The correction of teeth and craniofacial malformations always involves teamwork between the orthodontist and the maxillofacial surgeon.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    In a conventional treatment plan, the order followed is:<\/p>\n

    1. Orthodontic preparation of the mouth, with aligners <\/a><\/strong><\/span>or braces,<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n
    2. Orthodontic preparation of the mouth, with aligners or braces,<\/li>\n
    3. Orthognathic surgery by the maxillofacial surgeon,<\/li>\n
    4. Orthodontic completion.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      The goal of pre-surgical orthodontics is to eliminate any existing dental abnormalities <\/strong>, to provide the surgeon with a stable relationship between the upper and lower arch in order to perform the planned skeletal movements.<\/p>\n

      Post-operative orthodontic treatment is essential to establish proper final occlusion.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>
